March 26, 2005 to January 2, 2016
Flame was an amazing dog. We had such fun together. She was my first show dog, the mother of my first litter of puppies, and my heart dog. I co-owned Flame with my good friend Peggy DaValt. I had helped her take a couple of her Gordons to obedience classes and had worked on a CD with my Golden Retriever, Shadow while she was trying to get a CD on one her of Gordons, Kiggen.
She came to me in the spring of 2005 and asked if I'd like to co-own a Gordon Setter puppy with her. After talking it over with my husband, I told her I'd love to co-own a dog with her but I wanted a girl. There were 2 girls in the litter- a big one and a little one. I ended up with the little one and decided to call her Flame. She was only 9 lbs when she came to live with me and my family. The funny thing is she ended up bigger than her sister, Sidney!
Flame grew into a lovely girl. She finished her show champion title by the age of 2 with 16 points and 3 majors. Peggy put most of her points on her but my daughter, Krista, put the last 2 points on her to finish. That was an exciting day! After that we decided to let Flame spend some time in the whelping box and March 31, 2009 she whelped a litter of 12 puppies out of Mac Edan- CH U-CH Sparkling Mac Edan RN MH CGC TDI. Peggy & I ended up keeping the yellow girl and named her Q- CH U-CH Lyric 'n' Amethyst Unquenchable Fire RN CGC. The next year we breed Flame to her nephew, Colt- CH U-CH Willowglen's Midnight Special. They had a littler of 9 on Mother's Day, May 9, 2010. Peggy & I again ended up with the yellow girl and named her Crescent- CH U-CH Lyric N Amethyst Rising o' the Moon CGC.
After the whelping box, Peggy and I decided to special Flame and see if we could get her Grand Champion title. With limited showing, Flame finished her GRCH in about 6 months. Along the way she received a specialty Best of Opposite Sex for a 5 point major, a Select Bitch for a 4 point specialty major as well as numerous BOS's at All-Breed shows. She also received a Best of Breed over her brother, River, who was the #3 Gordon Setter at the time. Flame's best pal, Lis Johnston De Souza, (shown above) put the last GRCH point on Flame and fell in love with her. She is a Master Groomer and used Flame in many grooming competition as well as specialing her for me.
After Flame had her GRCH title, I decided to get her Therapy certification and her READ certification. The two of us spent many happy hours at the local public library listening to children read to Flame. She LOVED going to the library! We made enough visits that she was able to receive her THDN (Therapy Dog Novice) title.
I will always be grateful to Peggy and Marte Wetzel (Flame's breeder) for allowing this amazing dog to be a part of my life. Flame was one of those once in a lifetime dogs and I am forever blessed to have shared my heart with her.
In December, 2014, I came home to find Flame so stiff she could hardly move. I took her to the vet the next day and found out her Lyme had popped up again but she also had a lump. We took an x-ray and one of her lymph nodes was huge. I scheduled a biopsy for the end of the week to find out what type of cancer it was. When they started the ultra-sound they came out and said there is no need to do the biopsy- she was full of cancer. Two weeks later on Jan. 2 I let Flame go. She was hurting so bad and I couldn't stand to see her suffer. It was one of the best gifts I could have given her but it broke my heart. Flame's legacy lives on in her children and grandchildren and in my heart and memories.
