We got Flame the end of May, 2005.  It was fun to have a puppy in the house again since our Golden Retriever, Shadow,  was 9 1/2 years old.   Flame was even more of a blessing and life saver when we found out that Shadow had inoperable cancer and had to be put down in July of  that year.

Puppy antics helped ease our sorrow.
Flame had a wonderful show career on her way to her Champion title.  At 6 months she made her show debut at the 2005 Gordon Setter National Specialty.  She didn't get in the ribbons but made the cut in a large 6-9 month class.

On September 8, 2006 she went Best in Puppy Sweepstakes at the Missouri Valley G.S. Specialty in Des Moines, IA.

Flame finished her Championship at just over 2 years of age with 3 majors and 16 points.  Her co-owner Peggy DaValt put the first 14 points on her and my daughter Krista Carlson put the last 2 points on her at the Waukesha KC in July, 2007.

Flame also finished her UKC Champion title  July 15, 2007 owner handled by Laurie.  She finished her 3rd competition win by getting a Gundog Group 1.

Flame finished her JH in 2007 as well with some very nice scores and in 2008 she got her Rally Novice title.

In 2009, Flame took time off from competition events to enter the whelping box.   March 31, 2009 she whelped a litter of 12 out of MacE - Ch U-Ch Amethyst's Sparkling Mac Edan RN MH CGC TDI and on May 9, 2010 she whelped a litter of 9 out of Colt- Ch U-Ch Willowglen's Midnight Special.   You can see the puppies from each litter on the Litter Information page.

After puppies Laurie & Flame got their Therapy Dog certification so they could do READ at the local library.  They enjoy listening to kids read once a month.   Check out her library dog page at http://www.librarydogs.com/Wisconsin-Flame.html
2011
Then in September, 2011 we took her to back to back Missouri Valley G.S. Specialties in Des Moines, IA where she got Select Bitch for a 4 point major and then Best of Opposite Sex for a 5 point major. This gave her 24 of the 25 points needed so the end of September Peggy took her up to Sheboygan, WI where she again took Best of Opposite Sex to finish her Grand Championship, almost exactly 6 months from the day she got her first Grand Champion points.  Flame finished her Grand Champion title with 6 majors, 6 competition wins and 27 points.

Thanks to Lis Johnston for piloting Flame to her win.
In 2011, Laurie & Peggy decided to try to get her Grand Champion title. March of 2011 in Raleigh, NC she started off with a BANG by going BOB over her brother River, MBISS U-MBIS AKC/UKC GCH Glen Oaks River Breeze Shiraz (who finished 2011 as the number 3 Gordon Setter).

Thanks to Madison Kennedy for showing Flame so beautifully.

2012
Flame was shown very sparingly in 2012  but she still won several BOS and Select Bitches including a Specialty Select Bitch at the North Country Specialty in January 2012.

Lis Johnston also used her in a couple of grooming competitions.   Lis did a gorgeous job with Flame and the other dogs she used in the competition and came away with some very nice wins.
2013
Laurie decided to take Flame to an agility class and they are both learning the ropes.   Flame is having a grand time and is doing very well.    Laurie has decided to spend more time on the treadmill so she can keep up!

March 31 Lis piloted Flame to BOS for a 3 point GCH major at the Packerland KC.  Thanks to Judge Linda Robey for this lovely win.

April 2013 Flame qualifies for a Gordon Setter Club of America award.  She is the 4th place winner of the Brood Bitch of the Year award.  She had 3 kids finish their champion title in 2012.

Way to go to Flame and all her kids!  I'm so proud of you :)
Saturday, April 13, we headed down to Chattanooga, TN for the Gordon Setter National Specialty.
Sunday night was the Veteran's Sweepstakes. I was so excited when Flame won the 8-9 bitch class. Then she went back in for Best in Sweepstakes and she made the cut! Her brother, River, won the  8-9 dog class as well. So we got a picture taken of the two of them together.

Tuesday was the Brood Bitch class. It was a large class with 8 bitches and their offspring. Flame placed 2nd with Q and Crescent as her kids.   Thank you to Martha Martini for showing Q and to Madison Kennedy for showing Crescent.

Wednesday was Best of Breed. There were 27 bitch specials plus the Winners Bitch, the Hunting Bitch, the Veteran Bitch and the Field Trial Bitch. The judge divided them into 3 groups of 10 or so. I was so excited when Flame made the cut in her group! She didn't make the 2nd cut but that was OK. She had a blast showing and that is what matters most.

Thursday we all headed home to go back to our normal lives and wait for next year!

In May, Peggy and I officially retired Flame from the Breed ring.  She was spayed and now will just be shown occationally at specialties in Veterans Class.

Her best friend, Lis Johnston, will also be using her in grooming competitions.  Hopefully Flame and Laurie can continue agility class as well.

2014
Flame has a young grandson, Dozer, who has been doing very well in the show ring.
Dozer looks so much like Grandma Flame!
August - Flame received her Therapy Dog Novice title.  She loves going to the library to have the kids read to her.

September- The Gordon Setter National Specialty was held in Oconomowoc, WI this year.   Flame was entered in Veteran's Sweepstakes and Veteran Bitch class.  In Veteran's Sweepstakes she placed 3rd in the 9-10 yr class.  She was having a blast out there with her best pal Lis Johnston.  In the Veteran's Bitch class she was 2nd in a class of 8.  At the Regional Specialty following the National she was 4th in the Veteran's Bitch class.
December 15 (Monday)- I came home from work and Flame was so stiff she could hardly move. I thought her Lyme had kicked in and took her in the next day to get some more antibiotics for her. We did some bloodwork and an x-ray. Well she was again Lyme positive but they also found a mass. On the x-ray it looked to be about the size of a grapefruit. I decided to do a U/S guided biopsy on Friday. When they did the U/S they came back and said there is no need to do a biopsy- the only organs not affected are her kidneys and intestines. They gave me prednisone to reduce the size of the tumors and Tramadol to help with the pain.

2015

Friday, January 2- I let Flame go.  I came home from work and she was in pain.  The pain meds couldn't keep her pain at bay any more so I gave her the best gift I could and let her go.  My heart is breaking but it was the only thing I could do.   I had 2 weeks to say good-bye.  We did a biopsy to find out what kind of cancer took my girl- it was either a pancreatic tumor or an anal gland tumor that spread to the lymph nodes, liver and spleen.  By the time we found it there was nothing that could be done.

 RIP dear Flame.
